book recommendation: the pocket wife

I was searching to find something that I enjoyed reading as much as some of the ones I’ve been reading this summer. I’m not even sure how I found out about The Pocket Wife but I’m so glad I did. This is a murder mystery (sensing a theme?). But what makes this book SO interesting is the lead character is bipolar, and due to that, and a boozy afternoon she can’t remember what happened between her and her neighbor who is now dead…but she thinks she’s the last one to have seen her alive.
The book does a great job showing how manipulative people are and how people can turn your weakness or vulnerability against you (in her case her mental illness) to further their cause or point blame or attention away from themselves. It does a great job of taking you through how frustrating it feels to spiral through ups and downs as she tries to figure out what happened with things point back at her. I really loved this book!

book recommendation: the truth and other lies

Let me say: this book is SO GOOD! I found The Truth and Other Lies to be the perfect read. It was suspenseful but really easy to follow. The book gave you both a good insiders look into the main character and the mystery where you didn’t feel like “shoot, I should read that again to figure everything out”. The book follows a famous author…who doesn’t end up writing any his own books, it’s his wife who lives a secluded life that writes the books and doesn’t care about any of the fame, while he thrives on it and she has him publish her books under his name. He has a girlfriend…and you can see where this is all going. You oddly are rooting for and against him at the same time and can’t quite figure out what you should feel.

I highly recommend this. It’s a really quick read. I zipped through it in about 2 days!

Crazy Rich Asians – book recommendation

crazy rich asians review

I have to be honest, I remember seeing this book when it first came out and was only interested in it because of the cover….but for some reason the description I read didn’t grab me so I didn’t read it. WHY?! I recently came across and my, oh my. I love this book! Unfortunately the library didn’t have the book with a better cover, but I guess I’ll settle for GOLD glitter.

Here is a word of advice about this Crazy Rich Asians. You might be initially questioning whether you can read it because the story starts out with lots of Chinese slang (yes, slang) and there are asterisks and footnotes lining nearly every page. Worse than subtitles! But it suddenly dies down and gets on a more simplified pace. I do have to say, some of the footnotes are hilarious.

The story follows an American-born Chinese woman who falls in love with a handsome but sort of allusive guy. He invites her to a wedding in China and to meet this family. Of course she knows nothing about them and thats when it gets crazy! You are catapulted into extreme wealth of Asia and its so interesting to read what certain perceptions of areas are and just how competitive, and downright crazy (and crazy rich) these characters are. Everyone is super colorful and to be honest it was a nice escape from some of the other books that I typically read. You learn about the characters perceptions, standards, and expectations of another culture without really any preconceived ideas…because of course I don’t often have the opportunity to galavant with the uber-wealthy of Asia!

One more book checked off my summer reading list! What have you been reading this summer?

summer reading on a budget

We are headed to OBX this weekend and I’ve got another book I’ve just started. I have been in a reading funk and finally decided to start looking at some things to read on my Nook. Unfortunately Nook books are full-price! Explain to my why you can’t use Barnes & Noble coupons on those books!

Anyway, I had read online that you could download library books on your ereader so…I got a library card last week! I’m a bit at the mercy of what the mercer county library’s have available (I’m on a waitlist for most of these) and I’ve been searching out what exactly they have available digitally or what I need to get in hardcopy. My summer reading wish list isn’t quite the order I would have planned, but for free? I’ll take it!

I’ve heard great things about The Vacationers and I just started reading it. Have you read it?

summer reading wish list

summer reading wish list | as GOLD as it gets blog

I’ve taken a hiatus from reading…I haven’t been found anything to keep me hooked. I’ve been reading Mrs Queen takes the Train, but I could only get about 65% invested in the book. Although, I do love that its truly modelled after the royal family.

I’ve got my Nook charged and I’m ready to dive into some good summer reads. I’ve crafted a list of some books that I think will help clear the drought.

The Girl on the Train : All I need to know is that is as crazy as Gone Girl and I’m in…

The Status of all Things : What if your Facebook status dictated what happened in real life…

Luckiest Girl Alive : I got this recommendation from Reese Witherspoon’s instagram. She raved about it and is producing it as a movie!

After I Do : A married couple decides to spend a year apart with no contact to decide if their relationship can last…

Maybe in Another Life : Ever wonder what could happen if you made a different choice? This book shows both paths her life could have taken!

Crazy Rich Asians : What if your boyfriend was an extreme sort of wealthy and asia’s most eligible bachelor?

I’m diving into The Girl on the Train and I’m sure it won’t last the two weeks until vacation! What’s on your summer reading list? Have you read any of these?
