true north collection – my secret to fewer hair washes!

It’s sincerely difficult for me to want to wash my hair. It’s just so much work to have it dry (if I sleep with it wet or damp in a ponytail it won’t dry all night!) and then to get it straight. But I sweat so much in spin I simply cannot make my hair last more than one day..and when you go 3-4x week thats a lot of washing and drying that I literally do not have time for.

True North has literally been a life saver for me. They all are crafted so well and they are so durable. I wash them in the washing machine and let them lay flat to dry and they are just as springy as they were the day I got them. The width of the headband is larger than I would choose just for looks but let me tell you, it spans so much of your hair that it literally soaks your sweat up and best of all they are super affordable at $7.

To make my hair last I wear it up in a high bun and a True North headband. They are designed to go down to your forehead past your hairline, mine sits back a little bit only because thats where it more comfortably fits with my widow’s peak.

After class I leave it on until I get home about 15-20 minutes and let it continue to soak everything up and then let my hair down and run large sprays of dry shampoo through it all to get anything that hasn’t dried. I’ve noticed if I take it off too early my hair doesn’t do as well. Honestly I can go for 3 days and 2 classes on a single wash.

During my spin classes it 100% stays in place–I’ve been testing these for a few months because I really wanted to be sure. Once I put them on I pull it slightly down over my ears and it really doesn’t budge!north

I love all the vibrant prints and colors that they come in. Definitely check out the shop on  Etsy!

Thanks to True North Collection for sending me some headbands to try!

flair for your hair!

I’ve been so excited for this post! I know this might seem crazy but you must must must take a little journey over to the Elizabeth Heard Etsy shop and pick yourself up a barrette. These are on heavy rotation right now because they are not only charming but practical, and actually hold your hair perfectly!

There are “party animals” like this elephant (perfect to pair with Lilly Pulitzer!) and a rhino and seriously beautiful agate ones – keep scrolling to get a peek of those. I always had bows and barrettes in my hair growing up (did you see my extensive bows here?) and this is the perfect way to add a little flair (as Elizabeth has coined: flair for your hair!) without looking like a child!

Elizabeth Heard is an independent line of carefully crafted hair accessories. Created by designer, Elizabeth Heard White, the accessories are designed for women to find their finishing touch by adding a dose of flair to the hair. Each barrette from Elizabeth Heard is individually hand-crafted with traditional accessory making techniques and inspected for flaws before heading out the door. The line pays tribute to the designer’s middle name as well as the name of her grandmother, the queen of flair.

Sometimes when you order things on etsy its a little sloppy. Maybe the edges aren’t perfectly hemmed, something isn’t totally glued straight, etc. That is not the case with Elizabeth Heard Barrettes. These look like you picked them up at Nordstrom! There is no hint that these are anything less than perfectly manufactured. They feel totally solid, don’t slip down your hair like some barrettes can do. It’s not that I was really surprised, its just…thats not always the case! And look how cute the etching is on the back!

A little introduction to Elizabeth, the lady behind the barrettes: I have an unabashed obsession with hair barrettes, and have since childhood. From swimming to sleeping, you would rarely find me without one. My love for barrettes stayed in tact but noticed a niche in the market for quality and unique hair accessories. I always dreamed of starting my own line and attended Parsons School of Design after graduating from SMU in Dallas, TX where I was able to hone my skills for crafting custom hair wear. My barrettes began as a fun personal passion and have recently evolved into a small online and wholesale business. I am so grateful for the women with flair who find their finishing touch with one of my barrettes and am really excited for what’s to come.

turquoise slab necklace + a dirty little secret

I wanted a turquoise slab necklace for a really long time. I wanted it to have a little variation in length, large slabs with texture and needed it to look glam, not southwest. It took me SO long to find the perfect one…I’m talking about 2 years! Well once I got this gem (ha!) I was so excited to wear it and I just KNEW I would get so many compliments because it was exactly what I had been looking for… turquoise slab necklace But you know what. No one compliments it. NO ONE. I couldn’t figure out…like can they not see these gorgeous slabs that I searched for? Are they so dazzled by the words coming out of my mouth they can’t see my necklace? And I realized that I don’t really care. Which is hard because I want people to like me and think I have nice things and if I’m honest I want people to want what I have. Isn’t that so ugly? Yikes!  This necklace has taught me a lot. And not that I REALLY like it paired with hot pink (which I do). But having nice things is lovely but you need to spend money (and time) investing in things that you really like; don’t just do them for others. I wear this necklace all the time (it also looks great with navy) and this necklace actually brings me a lot of joy even if it doesn’t result in compliments because it took a lot of effort to find exactly what I wanted but it also reminds me to do things or buy things because I want too – not for the reactions of others.

In case you like the necklace and happen to be on the hunt for one I bought mine on Etsy here. If you need apothecary jars check out these and these.

Where I found it – living room style

I always get asked where I find things in our house so I thought I would give a little peek. You definitely don’t have to spend a lot…though you will.

living room

Starting out we both had futons for couches, so we’ve come along way! Don’t be afraid to take your time and peruse. Use online sites like to find what you are looking for and take your time. It’s okay to slowly build your pieces, you don’t want to deplete your savings trying to decorate in one big swoop. Rome wasn’t built in a day people!
